American Quilt Retailer: August 2022 Issue

Headlines are filled with dire warnings about the economy. Will this recession be bad? Who knows! But I’m telling myself that I’ve just survived a pandemic, surely I can survive what comes next—whatever that is.

In my family, we often remind each other we are worrying about the wrong thing, and I’m embracing that phrase more and more every day. So how am I tackling what might be next on the horizon? With a positive attitude and a growth mindset.

A growth mindset means you thrive on challenge; you don’t see failure as a way to describe yourself but rather as a springboard for growth and developing your abilities.

Someone with a growth mindset views intelligence, abilities and talents as learnable and capable of improvement through effort. On the other hand, someone with a fixed mindset views those same traits as inherently stable and unchangeable.

In these uncertain times, we must be willing to ebb and flow with the circumstances in front of us. What do we do best and how can we focus on those skills/products/events and make them even better? What do our customers need to feel calm, safe and inspired?

Become laser-focused on doing things that move your business forward. If you have had success
in the past three years with a particular product, evaluate how you can bring that product to the forefront for all your customers. Or if you’ve had success with a certain event, are you re-creating that event in the next six months?

Also, review your numbers. Are your expenses under control? Are you looking ahead to how you might bridge any financial gap that develops? Have you talked to your banker about the what-ifs ahead?

If we just sit back and wait for things to happen, we might be too late to take action. Instead, spend time reviewing your business today so you can grow into the future.
